Gymnastics Basics

Levels

Level 1- Level 10

Attire

Gymnasts often wear this one piece bodysuit called a leotard. Some gymnasts wear nike pro shorts over it so that they are not just wearing a leo (a "leo" is a leotard). Other gymnasts tend to wear a shirt and nike pros but you don't see that often.

The Events

Floor:

This is personally my FAVOURITE event! There are leaps, tumbling passes, jumps, turns, oh my! These are the tricks you basically need for the level you are in (example: Level 7, you need to know how to do a roundoff back handspring layout).

Uneven Bars:

Usually gymnasts call these just bars. This event is basically two bars but unlike the men's gymnastics, there is one high bar and one low bar. For this event you are just trying to swing yourself around the bar is multiple different ways. In order to get onto the bars it's called a mount, and off the bars a dismount. Of course the higher the level the more complex it is.

Balance Beam:

When people watch this event, it is SUPER DUPER SCARY! This is just one high beam that people tumble, dance, turn, and leap on! Just like the uneven bars, in order to get on you use a mount, and off the beam, a dismount.

Vault:

The vault is a big deal for some gymnasts. For the more elite gymnasts they tend to use a vault called a yurchenko. Usually they start doing it in level 8. It is where they do a round-off into a back handspring to what ever tumbling move they want! They vault on a thing called a time-table.

Well my friends, that's the end of this blog. Stay tuned for some tutorials, basics about gymnastics and more!

Bye my Flippers!
